Objective

The key objective of the project is to improve trade and economic relations between the three regions, as well as gaining foreign direct investment by connecting Europe and Asia. The project will facilitate transportation of passengers and goods, principally oil.

Description

The railway was officially commissioned after long delays in late 2017. By avoiding routes through Russia, the BTK line acts as a crucial segment of the Middle Corridor, bridging China, Central Asia, and Europe and heavily cutting cargo transit times. The new railway construction was split into two specific geographic sections: In Turkey: Approximately 76 to 79 km of new railway was built connecting Kars to the Georgian border. In Georgia: Approximately 27 to 30 km of brand-new track was built (specifically the Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi section) to connect into the Turkish network
