Objective

The core reason for this massive investment is to secure Rotterdam's position as Europe's premier logistics hub while meeting the rising global demand for containerised trade. As supply chains face increasing pressure, this expansion creates the necessary capacity to absorb higher cargo volumes without causing bottlenecks. Additionally, the project directly supports aggressive global decarbonisation goals. By building a fully automated, net-zero emissions facility that relies on shore power and electric terminal equipment, APM Terminals is future-proofing its operations against strict environmental regulations, ensuring long-term commercial and ecological sustainability for international trade.

Description

The APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion in the Port of Rotterdam is a massive one-billion-euro infrastructure project designed to double the facility's container capacity. Spanning approximately 47.5 hectares of newly reclaimed land, the project adds one thousand meters of deep-sea quay wall capable of handling the largest ultra-large container vessels. The physical infrastructure heavily integrates advanced automation, featuring a massive fleet of electric automated guided vehicles and automated stacking cranes. To support regional logistics, the site expands its on-dock rail system, allowing for direct, efficient freight transfers away from road networks.
