Description

The Tehran–Mashhad High-Speed Electrification Upgrading Project is a massive rail transit development in Iran designed to electrify and speed-optimize the existing 926-kilometre double-track corridor connecting the capital to Iran’s second-largest city, Mashhad. The mega-project is a central pillar of Iran’s transit policy to integrate into the transcontinental ⁠China–Iran–Europe rail freight corridor.

History

Following a period of complete stagnation where the original Chinese contractor (CMC) temporarily withdrew due to sanctions complexity, Iran and China signed a formal contract revival. Furthermore, following targeted military airstrikes on the cross-country transport network, Iranian engineering teams had to prioritize emergency repairs to restore standard diesel services.
