The main objective of this study is to map major infrastructure and investment projects currently being developed in Crete and to situate them within a wider international infrastructure system, with effects at local, national and international levels. Here, we explore the role of Crete in the wider plans for infrastructure corridors in the south-eastern Mediterranean. Crete is emerging as a hub and is in the midst of an intense wave of infrastructure and investment activity. It is a key point for various international energy and digital interconnections, with major investments in green energy production and hydrocarbon extraction planned for the island, both on the island and in the marine areas south of Crete, which are currently being explored. A new airport and highway are under construction, while the port of Heraklion — the largest city on the island — is being transferred to private interests, with plans to use it as a transfer station for electric cars from China to Europe.
